Bootie is a monthly party in San Francisco for music mashup afficionados, and is apparently the site of many new bootleg debuts.
I have a few of their previous compilations, but
Best of Bootie 2005 has just been
released, and it's a great, great listen if you like this kind of thing. It's a free twenty tracks, crossmixed for continuous play.
After two days, it's hard to pick out a favourite yet, but front runners include:
"
Somebody Rock Me" by Party Ben ( "
Rock The Casbah" [Clash] vs. "
Somebody Told Me" [Killers] ). Occasionally, great mashups happen along which can stand as independent tracks in their own right without any prior knowledge of the source material ( but honestly, who hasn't heard of The Clash? ) "
And Your Bird Was Right" ( "
And Your Bird Can Sing" [Beatles] vs. "
You Were Right" [Badly Drawn Boy] from CCC's "Revolved" springs to mind, but this is another great example which keeps the feel of the original piece flawlessly. I would love to be able to sing this at Karaoke.
"
P-Funk is Playing At My House" by DJ Riko is an amalgamation of a wall of P-Funk samples, LCD Soundsystem's "Daft Punk is Playing at My House" and a set of original guest vocals. Great.
"
Badd to Me" by King of Pants ( "
Close to Me" [Cure] " vs. "
Badd" [Yin-Yang Twins] ) is just funny by virtue of the contrast of the mopey, sensitive Cure with the bombastic stupidity of The Yin-Yang Twins. I actually laughed when I first identified the instrumentals.
However, it's all good, and it's always nice to see that great "I hate you so much!" sample from Kelis' "
Caught Out" getting another run. I think you should check it out, before the rights-holders have it removed forever.
